New-York Historical Society, a preeminent educational and research institution, is home to both New York City’s oldest museum and to one of the nation’s most distinguished independent research libraries. N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. The DiMenna Children’s History Museum opened in 2011 and offers family visitors a permanent exhibition (aimed at 7-14 year olds) and a broad range of New York and American history themed intergenerational family programs (for children as young as 18 months up through 14 year olds).

JOB SUMMARY:  
The New-York Historical Society is seeking to hire a part-time Family Programs Educator to serve as support for the Reading into History family book club in the DiMenna Children’s History Museum; to conduct research for specific projects; to lead off-site programs as needed; to conduct digital and in person outreach; and to teach other family programs as needed.

The position is part-time with 7 - 10 admin/research hours per week ($18/hr) with additional teaching hours ($25/hr) on an as-needed basis. The educator will act as the Reading into History assistant one Sunday per month (12pm – 5pm) during the academic year.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting with the facilitation of the Reading into History family book club, which takes place one Sunday each month during the academic year and serves family member participants with children ages 9-12. Tasks include: setting up snacks and materials, facilitating group discussions, leading portions of a gallery tour, etc.
  • Serving as the administrative assistant for Reading into History. Tasks include: corresponding with guest scholars and authors, ordering materials, coordinating logistics, crafting rich, intellectually stimulating questions, conducting author interviews for History Detective Blog posts, and other duties as assigned.  
  • Researching project-specific eras of American history to support Reading into History, Living History, and Family Programs at large; synthesizing the information into easily digested outlines that other educators can use to learn or brush up on the given subject matter.
  • Assisting during other family programs (special exhibition programming, drop-in crafts, etc.), holiday events (Halloween, President’s Day, July 4th, etc.), and DCHM Family Benefit as needed.
  • Acting as a substitute floor manager, which could include but is not limited to overseeing DCHM gallery spaces on Saturdays or Sundays, including tidying the library and brochure rack; interacting with visitors; offering drop-in activities to families; and coordinating Living History programs. 
  • Providing administrative support to the Family Programs department at large.
  • Being available to work weekends and some holidays and have flexible remaining hours.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA in related field
  • Regular Sunday availability
  • Ability to work independently, including problem-solving and decision-making two plus years’ experience working with children and families, including facilitating discussions and leading art making activities
  • Interest in New York City and U.S. history
  • Flexibility and ability to work on some Saturdays, holidays, and school vacation weeks
  • Experience working in a museum, a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

This position will require the employee to lift (up to 25 lbs), bend, stoop, walk, speak and stand for up to 6 hours in a day.
