REPORTS TO: Manager of Digital Learning Programs

Digital Learning Educators, under the supervision of the Manager of Digital Learning Programs, work on all tasks related to digital humanities education programs for middle and high school students at the New-York Historical Society. Digital Learning Educators support the daily operations of the Tech Commons @ New-York Historical, including developing and facilitating curricula that integrate digital tools into engaging experiences with the museum’s collections, and supporting program administration. Educators will bring expertise in digital learning, including deep knowledge of and facility with the latest hardware, software, and/or coding languages (i.e. digital photography and photo editing, graphic design, audio and video recording, 3D modeling and printing, web design and coding, gaming and game design, virtual and/or augmented reality, etc.) and a passion for humanities education and working with teen audiences. 

The Tech Commons, opening September 2018, will be a state-of-the-art digital learning lab in which students will engage in authentic learning opportunities at the intersection of STEM and the humanities. These tech-enabled, history-driven programs seek to inspire young people, girls in particular, to pursue ambitious educational and career goals in the humanities and STEM fields.

The Digital Learning Educators will play a key role in creating and supporting a safe and engaging learning community for teens, implementing best practices for social-emotional development and valuing teens' diversity of experiences and perspectives. In addition to office hours, Educators must be available to work weekend and evening schedules as needed throughout the calendar year.

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required.


  • Experience developing curricula and facilitating programming for teen audiences, particularly in an informal education setting
  • Experience and facility with various types of tech hardware (including 3D printers and scanners, digital cameras and video cameras, 360 degree cameras, etc.) as well as the ability to troubleshoot issues stemming from this technology
  • Experience and facility with various types of software and coding (including Adobe Creative Cloud, Google suite, Pro Tools, coding languages, slicing and mesh generation software such as Meshmixer and Cura, etc.) and ability to determine the best tools to meet programmatic goals
  • Competency and demonstrated interest in digital learning and education technology
  • Experience leading object- and inquiry-based lessons
  • Ability to understand and implement daily operation details with accuracy
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly organized with great attention to detail
  • Skillful ability to multitask and balance multiple priorities
  • Superior computer skills, including Microsoft Office and information/database management
  • Ability to work individually and as a member of a team
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Teen Programs staff to troubleshoot issues reported by staff and students
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings

Responsibilities for this position include but may not be limited to:

  • Work closely with the Manager of Digital Learning Programs to support the development and implementation of all digital learning programs for middle and high school students at the New-York Historical Society
  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate out-of-school-time programming for middle and high school students
  • Support the development of a calendar of digital learning programs that include drop-in exploration, digital arts workshops, digital game design workshops, collaborations with partner organizations, and more
  • Support the daily operations of the Tech Commons, including programming, materials management, data collection and analysis, marketing and outreach, and more
  • Participate in project planning and development for new teen initiatives
  • Collaborate with Education department staff on the execution of periodic special events
  • Additional duties as requested

The Digital Learning Educator is a 24-hour/week part-time position, compensated at $18/hour for administrative work and program preparation and $30/hour for program facilitation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

This position will require the employee to lift, bend, stoop, walk, speak and stand for up to 7 hours in a day. Sedentary computer work is also required.
