Honoring Healthcare Professionals Past and Present
Josephine Seuringer Mahoney attended St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing between 1953 and 1956, eventually teaching nursing, raising four children, and ultimately working as a pediatric nurse practitioner. This installation, featuring her nursing student cape, examines the essential role of nurses. They may not wear capes today, but nurses are superheroes. Today, nurses are on the front lines fighting COVID-19. The New-York Historical Society recognizes these men and women and all healthcare workers for their compassion and courage.
Exhibitions at New-York Historical are made possible by Dr. Agnes Hsu-Tang and Oscar Tang, the Saunders Trust for American History, the Evelyn & Seymour Neuman Fund, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
